The Arinto grapes for the 2022 Monte Ilha come from a 10-year-old vineyard in the Dão, located on granite soil.

The must fermented in a 60-year-old Bota barrel from Montilla, Spain. After fermentation, 10% of the wine was diverted and flor yeast was added. The yeast film remained active until summer, after which the barrel was refilled.

Characterized by a spicy and slightly nutty note, complemented by a hint of broth, the wine is tasty, intriguing and lively, with an impressive umami effect on the palate, created by the interaction of the yeast with the wine.

In total, the wine was aged on the full lees for 17 months. With an alcohol content of 12.5%, a pH of 3.17 and 6.41 grams of acid per liter, care was taken to preserve the characteristics of the barrel without allowing the flor to predominate, and a high-acid variety was chosen to minimize possible impurities.

The finish is delicious and almost salty. A total of 700 bottles were produced and bottled in February 2024.

Moreish is the personal project of winemaker Luis "Faísca" Lopes, who worked at Comtes Lafon in Burgundy and later at Quinta da Pellada for 10 years.
Lopes is now responsible for the wines of Domínio do Açor and also helps Antonio Madeira and Quinta das Marias in Dão and is the winemaker of Palacio Quemado in Extremadura, Spain.
Since 2013 he has been working on his own wines in different locations, but they do not have a designation of origin and therefore have to be given code names and other information on the labels, as he cannot name grape varieties, etc. He makes wines from Dão, Bairrada and Extremadura, all in small quantities. Very interesting wines.

Manufacturer

Luís Lopes is a renowned oenologist closely linked to the Dão region of Portugal. He has gained extensive experience in this region, particularly through his work for Alvaro Castro at Quinta da Pellada and through projects with Antonio Madeira. Since 2018 he has been the responsible oenologist at Quinta das Marias under the direction of Peter Eckert.

Luís completed his academic career in oenology in Portugal at the Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, followed by international stints in Burgundy at Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon in Viré-Clessé, in New Zealand and in Germany. These experiences enabled him to look beyond Portuguese viticulture.

In 2013, he founded his own project "Moreish", which originally started in the Dão region but soon expanded to include a wider region. The name "Moreish" is based on a Portuguese expression for particularly tasty drinks that leave you wanting more - a concept that Luís has transferred to the world of wine.

In addition to his work at Quinta das Marias, Luís also works for other prestigious wineries, including Domínio do Açor and Bodegas Palacio Quemado in Spain. He also acts as a consulting oenologist for various wine projects, including his personal project Moreish and work with António Madeira. His career also includes positions at internationally renowned wineries such as Martinborough Vineyard and Gunderloch Winery.

Luís Lopes' career reflects a deep commitment to terroir and wine authenticity, always aiming to create wines that honor their origins and inspire continued enjoyment.
