Edited by Niklas Bender!
Lovely and rough, patriotic and left-wing. Brittany combines charming contrasts in geography and attitudes and is also a literary land waiting to be discovered.
Brittany is well-known and popular as a holiday region, despite or perhaps because of its unpredictable climate: the picturesque landscape, the good food, the hospitable and party-loving Bretons attract several million visitors every year. The situation is different when it comes to literature from and about Brittany, which is little known.
This literary invitation presents authors from the past and present who tell exciting, touching, funny and enchanting stories about their region on the very edge of Europe. Sometimes they are avant-garde in their search for new themes and forms; biographical texts bring rural everyday life to life; poetry is about nature and elemental forces, and the lyrics of many musicians from Brittany reflect the impetuous desire for freedom in their homeland. Brittany is also worth a trip from a literary perspective!
Niklas Bender was born in Braunschweig in 1976. After working in Berlin, Paris and Tübingen, he currently teaches French and Italian literature at the University of Freiburg and also works as a literary critic for the F A Z. Since 1999, he has spent most of his holidays in Brittany and is married to it in more than one sense.
