details

For gourmets and lovers of culinary traditions, Camargue rice opens up a fascinating world in which Asian heritage and Provencal terroir culture combine in a unique way. Although rice is often associated with Far Eastern cuisine, it has found a new home in the Camargue and has become the symbol of this region. Its journey began more than eight millennia ago in the fertile plains of southern China and reached the sun-drenched climes of Provence towards the end of the 13th century. Here it found enthusiastic followers among the advocates of the "blanc manger", an early form of gluten-free diet that quickly made rice popular.

The mild climate of the Camargue, with its small temperature fluctuations, abundance of sunlight and the cleansing Mistral wind, proved to be an ideal breeding ground for rice cultivation. In this natural paradise, rice has developed into an indispensable crop whose importance extends far beyond gastronomy. The environmentally conscious rice farmers of the region have recognized that rice cultivation not only provides delicious yields, but also fulfills an important ecological function: it helps to regulate the salinity of the soil and thus makes a significant contribution to the preservation of the delicate ecosystem.

The recognition for the sustainable cultivation methods and the outstanding quality of Camargue rice is reflected in the award of the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). This seal not only certifies the origin of the rice, but above all recognizes the care and traditional knowledge with which the rice farmers cultivate their noble grain. For gourmets, this means the certainty that with every grain of Camargue rice, a piece of Provencal lifestyle and culinary excellence is brought to the plate - a symbiosis of nature, tradition and enjoyment that is unparalleled.
