The pink onion from Roscoff, from Finistère in Brittany (literally: end of the world), is an absolute “must” for all gourmets, as is the pink garlic from Lautrec, the walnuts from Grenoble or the green lentils from Le Puy.

We get our pink onions from Roscoff from the siblings Eric and Tiphaine Quemener from the "Ferme de Kergus".

They are true Bretons and are among the best producers of this noble product. Her onion braids are regularly voted some of the most beautiful in the country!

The pink onion from Roscoff is at the same time mild and very aromatic and can be used in a variety of ways in the kitchen: raw in salads or confit, for sauces, soups, pissaladière... Bought as a braid, the onions keep well until stored in a cool, dry and dark place next spring.

The pink onion from Roscoff contains a lot of vitamins A, B and C and was once a popular food and medicine for sailors.

It was introduced in 1647 by a Breton monk from Lisbon - yes, globalization already existed - and experienced its heyday in the 19th century when the so-called "Johnnies", poor farmers from Finistère, brought these onions to England and even Scotland , where they went door to door offering their wares. They often only traveled on foot or on rickety bicycles.

The nickname Johnnie came about because they often had the typical Breton names Yann or Yannick, which was too difficult for the British to pronounce.

Maison Quéméner is a family farm in Roscoff, a picturesque port town on the north coast of Finistère in Brittany. In this area of Haut-Léon, farmers grow outdoor vegetables, helped by the fertile soil and the very mild climate.
We have been active as farmers and greengrocers here since 1850. We, that's Eric and Tiphaine Quéméner, brother and sister business partners! Since 2018 we have taken over the farm in the heart of the town of Roscovit.

How do you recognize good quality?
A good onion can be recognized by the fact that the shoot is firm and does not yield too much when pressed with your hand or fingers. If the shoot is soft on top, it was harvested and stored incorrectly and should not be bought.

Roscoff onions are firm to the touch and crispy firm in the flesh. This guarantees long durability. In order to maintain this quality, the plants are pulled up to a third of the ground before the final harvest and pre-dried in the field for at least eight days. This can only be done by hand. After that, the harvest is also done by hand to avoid injuries. With subsequent dry, cool and dark storage, they remain fresh and aromatic for a long time. They are available from September to April.

Diese beiden Produkte sind wohl das beste, was man bekommen kann. Ab September schaue ich schon immer ungeduldig, ob sie wieder haben sind. Auf dem Balkon hält sich alles bis ins nächste Jahr. Ausgezeichnet! Auch mit allem übrigen von Maître Philippe waren wir immer sehr zufrieden.
