In the past, the Bastardo grape was particularly popular for the production of port wines. The reason for this was the high sugar and alcohol content of the grape, which is necessary for this special type of wine.

But as so often in the course of history, the preferences and tastes of wine drinkers developed. As a result, many of the vineyards that grew the Bastardo grape were cleared to make way for other grape varieties that were more popular at the time.

The wine presents itself with a pale cherry red colour. Its aromas enchant with a wonderful sweetness that highlights warm herbs and cherry fruits. It is pure and elegant with hints of foliage. On the palate it is soft, warm and fruity-sweet. Light and extremely elegant, it contains beautiful notes of cherries and herbs as well as subtle tannins. A truly beautiful wine.

But there is still hope for lovers of this particular grape. Rita, a winemaker, was fortunate to inherit a piece of land, 5 hectares to be precise, where her grandfather had planted Bastardo grapes in the Douro Highlands, Portugal, half a century ago.

Rita follows a natural winemaking process and produces the wine in so-called lagars - traditional stone wine presses - with a very small addition of sulfur. This natural process results in a wine with a bright color and intense aroma and flavor that enhances the characteristics of the Bastardo grape.

It is worth noting that the name Bastardo is also used interchangeably with the Trousseau grape variety. Despite the similarity in name, however, the taste of Bastardo from the Douro is quite different from that from the Jura region of France. Both represent their unique regions and express the peculiarities of their terroir.

It grows on 50-year-old vines on the Quinta Chão do Pereiro that Rita's grandfather planted there and there are only 5,000 bottles of this vintage worldwide!

The young Portuguese winegrowers have now rediscovered this grape - much to our luck! This 100% Bastardo from Conceito delights with its warm herbal and cherry notes and is a very elegant, light wine with subtle tannins.

By the way, the bastardo also has a brother: the Legítimo !

Manufacturer

Anyone who is interested in the wines from the Douro Valley cannot ignore Rita Marques Ferreira. She is currently one of the most highly traded new generation winemakers in this region. Their wines regularly receive the best ratings from international wine critics.

Rita's family has been growing wine in the upper Douro for several generations. She learned her craft in Bordeaux and then worked as a “flying winemaker” in New Zealand and South Africa. Now she has returned to her roots and holds the scepter of the winery firmly in her hand.
An impressive 85 hectares of vineyards are cultivated by hand at an altitude of 500 meters. The approach is generally very close to nature and consciously avoids the use of herbicides and systemic plant protection products.
She sells part of the harvest to other wineries. Every year she selects the best vineyards for her own winery and produces elegant, fresh wines with lots of freshness and minerality. Everything is well thought out because Rita has a concept. Hence the name: Conceito.
